At 麻豆成人版, you spend a lot of time with the actual professor and so it's a two way learning process 鈥 we learn from the graduate students and the graduate students learn from us.</p> <p dir="ltr">All the current faculty here are eager and constantly writing grants for funding. So we get funding from a variety of national funding agencies. Basic research refers to trying to solve some of the very basic and fundamental problems that appear in computing, including some of the more theoretical problems. When you move on to the applied side, you really try to combine some of this basic research with tools or technologies that will be useful in the real world.</p> <p dir="ltr">For example, doing research in cybersecurity often requires you to think like a hacker in some sense. You might be聽 trying to find out new attack avenues right, research the attack surface, and examine existing systems to identify any vulnerabilities. All of this is done in order to come up with new ways of defending current systems and achieve security while preserving usability.聽</p> <p dir="ltr">In terms of tools for research, Ph.D. candidates work with various tools that look at statistics of computing analytics and data to figure out trends and try to predict outcomes or modify to come up with new tools and techniques. This has gotten a lot of attention after the Solar Winds attack that occurred at the end of 2020. Additionally, your own intellectual curiosity brings about new questions, and helps you think in an entirely new manner. You鈥檒l likely see many new terms that you鈥檙e unfamiliar with, and this can cause some confusion and frustration. Read on to familiarize yourself with some common phrases used in academia, and alleviate some of the stress that comes along with applying to universities.聽聽</p> <h3 dir="ltr"><strong>College Terms 101: 16聽Terms to Know Before You Apply</strong></h3> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>1. Early Action</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">Early action is when a student applies to a college early and is able to receive a decision from the college early on in the admission cycle. If accepted, the student is able to decide whether or not they want to accept the offer and attend the university.</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>2. Early Decision</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">Early decision is similar to early action, in that students are presented with the opportunity to apply to a university early. However, unlike early action, the student agrees to attend the university if they are accepted. They are only permitted to apply to one college at a time as an early decision candidate and must apply to other universities the traditional way. Don鈥檛 let time get away from you! Rolling Admission</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">Rolling admission is an admissions process where the school reviews student applications as they come in during a set period of time. Rolling admissions typically come after the deadlines for early action applications have passed.聽聽</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>4. Waitlist</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">If a student who has applied for admission is placed on a waitlist, that means that the student has not been offered admission to the university, but it is still possible that they can be. A university will place students on the waitlist after it has admitted the maximum number of students that it can for the current application period. It is still possible that some accepted students may choose not to attend, and when this happens, students on the waitlist may be offered admission.</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>5. Dual enrollment</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr"><a href="//www.njit.edu/precollege/partnerprograms">Dual enrollment</a>, also known as concurrent enrollment, is a program that allows students currently attending high school to take college-level courses, or for transfers to earn credit toward their BS or MS degree. Upon completion of the course, the student will receive credit for both high school and college. Typically, the student is required to achieve a grade of C or above in order to receive college credit. This credit then becomes a part of the student鈥檚 college academic record. This is a great way for high school students or transfers to jump-start their careers.聽聽</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>6. Transcript</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">Your transcript is a record of all of the courses you have taken and the grades you achieved in those courses. You have separate transcripts for your high school courses and your college courses. Typically, there are two types of transcripts 鈥 official and unofficial. Official transcripts usually come straight from your school鈥檚 registrar and can be authenticated as being legitimate. Unofficial transcripts are usually easily accessible through your school鈥檚 website and are useful for tracking your progress.聽</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>7. Tuition</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">Tuition is the amount of money that students owe based on their course load. COA</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">The cost of attendance (COA) is the total cost of all of your college-related expenses. FAFSA</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that you can use to apply for federal financial aid. This is an option available for students who may need help financing their education. Grant</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr"><a href="//www.njit.edu/financialaid/grants">Grants</a> are awards given to students that assist them with the financing of their education. Unlike other types of financial aid, grants do not need to be repaid. Grants are generally awarded by the federal government and are usually given out based on a student鈥檚 financial needs.聽</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>12. Loan</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">A loan is a form of financial aid that is expected to be repaid by the student at a future point in time. There are a number of different types of loans, with the most common loans being federal and private loans.聽</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>13. Work-study</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">A <a href="//www.njit.edu/financialaid/student-employment">work-study program</a> is a federal program in which universities are provided with federal funding so they can hire students for part-time jobs that will help those students pay for their education.聽</p> <h4 dir="ltr"><strong>14. Scholarship</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr"><a href="//www.njit.edu/financialaid/merit-based-scholarships">A scholarship</a> is a financial award that is presented to students and is generally awarded based on academic achievement. Academic advisor</strong></h4> <p dir="ltr">An academic advisor is someone assigned to you by your university based on your area of study. By choosing to come to 麻豆成人版, she was able to double up on her majors and bring her interests together. As an industrial design and history double major, Juliana worked to learn the lessons of the past in order to build a better future.聽</p> <p>鈥淏oth design and history are studies of humans because we鈥檙e designing for humans, so in that process, we get to understand them and see other people's experiences and how that will affect my design and how that affected history and the way things are now. Juliana has a strong passion for hiking and the outdoors 鈥 聽the open-ended nature of much of her assignments meant she could work on projects centered around this passion. Not only did this make her time working on her majors more engaging, but it meant she was actively building a portfolio of work in her intended field that could be shown off to future potential employers.</p> <p>鈥淔or projects, they鈥檒l give you a prompt, but then they鈥檒l let you explore different paths that you like. So for me, my biggest hobby is camping and things like that. So I鈥檝e had projects that I kinda leaned towards outdoor use and nature. I even made a whole hiking backpack for one of my projects. And with my portfolio filled with camping gear now, if I鈥檓 applying to certain companies that do those products, they鈥檒l see it in my portfolio and be like 鈥榳ow, you know, you鈥檙e really interested in this鈥. So it鈥檚 almost like we鈥檙e designers, but we鈥檙e also engineers and business majors and everything and anything possible that goes into this whole process鈥</p> <p>Equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experience that her courses at 麻豆成人版 provided her with, Juliana felt a strong sense of confidence for the future, and pride in the work she had accomplished.
