New Jersey Institute of Technology - Student Life /tags/student-life en 7 Ways to Prepare for Your First Year of College /admissions/blog-posts/7-ways-prepare-your-first-year-college
It can be a difficult transition for young adults to get acclimated to life away from home and a packed course schedule. That’s understandable, but don’t worry — with some helpful tips to adjust, you can flourish in this new environment. Follow this guide to make sure you set yourself up for a successful first year.

7 Ways to prepare for your first year of college

The best way to prepare for your new beginning at a four year university is by covering every facet of your academic career. Some are provided for you, some may be difficult to find or go under the radar. Embracing the transition will get you on the right track to feeling confident on-campus.

1) Wait to purchase your textbooks

Don’t always be so quick to buy the first textbook(s) you see on a syllabus. Professors may update or change their curriculum, switch textbooks or introduce new material even after the course has already begun. Waiting until after the first few classes gives you extra time to confirm what is needed and what isn’t. Unless the syllabus states to have the book in-hand by the first day of class, try to wait until you hear directly from the professor what is required.

When you buy your textbooks too early, you may be spending more money than you have to. Textbooks can be very expensive and some courses require more than one. With waiting to buy books comes helpful alternatives, such as renting, borrowing from the library, buying used books and even sharing with classmates when possible.

2) Research your major

Choosing what you wish to do with your career is a massive part of adapting to college life. Exploring the curriculum at your school, which includes core options, electives and professors, could help you feel more prepared in the beginning. When you think of these options prior to starting, you’ll be able to make a plan. Take advantage of advisors and their insights and attend department events to get a better perspective of what each major or career is like. You can also seek out other students or alum with that major for their feedback about their experiences.

If you choose a major and later decide it isn’t for you, don’t sweat it. About one third of students change their major over the course of their college career, and doing so first-year gives you the opportunity to make up credits so you can graduate at your desired pace. Life at university is about finding what’s right for you, including the degree you wish to earn and the career you dream of having.

3) Develop your people skills

College is a great place to practice the fundamental skills needed for professional development. There’s an array of opportunities for students to enhance social skills and build relationships. Practicing social growth from both a personal and professional standpoint is an effective way of building your career path.

Skills such as teamwork, problem solving, leadership, and organization are crucial for college. Throughout your time at college, you will most likely engage in a few group projects or work on a team for an assignment. Knowing how to positively contribute to the group and settle disputes can make all the difference in your team’s success. Embracing diversity and advancing your leadership skills can also help you interact with students who come from or have different backgrounds, cultures and perspectives.

Active listening is also a critical skill to develop. Attending lectures, seminars and discussions all require you to listen carefully to truly grasp the information. Learning how to ask meaningful questions and understand the responses to go with them will help you succeed in your courses.

4) Practice time management

Trying to balance going to class, homework, studying, school clubs, rest, and a social life can be overwhelming. Before you know it, you have missed a project deadline and forgot to study for an exam. Practicing time management is absolutely necessary to be able to stay on top of everything going on, while making sure you are taking care of yourself.

Creating a schedule by using a planner is a great tool to help you prioritize and plan your days. Mark down assignment due dates, exams, club meetings, and other important dates so you won’t forget them. You can even use an hourly planner to make sure you set aside enough time to eat, rest, study, go to the gym, and hang out with friends. This is a great way to get ahead of deadlines without sacrificing your mental health and wellbeing. Goals can be set daily or weekly, and breaking them into mini, obtainable steps can help you stay focused. Remember to be flexible with your schedule if something unexpected comes up.

5) Manage your finances

More responsibility in college means you may be managing your finances by yourself for the first time. Practicing smart money management can help maximize your economic well being, control your spending, and save for the future . Create a budget for yourself that directly reflects your income and expenses. This means outlining necessary expenses such as tuition, rent, textbooks, food and transportation. Tracking and adjusting each month can help establish that line and take weight off your shoulders about your finances.

Consider staying in touch with the financial aid office in order to receive scholarships and grants, and look into other organizations or associations that may be able to assist as well. If you’re looking into loans, keep them to a minimum. The more you take out, the more you will have to pay back in the future. Many universities offer student employment and work study programs to eligible students.

6) Make your living situation comfortable

Whether living in a dorm room, apartment or house, being away from home can seem daunting for a first-year student. Nonetheless, there are plenty of simple ways to alleviate the worry of housing and living with roommates.

Turn your room into a personal sanctuary by personalizing it with pictures, posters, artwork, and even plants. This will help make you feel more at home and comfortable. Once you decorate your room, keeping it organized and clean can ensure it becomes a motivational place to study and relax. Bins, shelves and desk drawers can keep things nice and neat so you can easily grab what you’re looking for and go. Finally, add some enhanced lighting to brighten your study environment and improve productivity.

When you meet your new roommate or roommates, take time to build healthy relationships with them. Engaging in positive communication and respecting boundaries can help foster a more welcoming aura in your housing unit. Think about organized meals, activities and chores to create a healthier and more supportive environment.

7) Get involved in extracurricular activities

Aside from classes and studying, find ways to get involved with campus events, clubs, and groups to make the most out of your time at college. Most universities offer a wide range of extracurricular activities that cater to various interests and passions. Engaging in extracurricular activities can foster personal growth, aid in the development of valuable skills and provide opportunities for social skills.

Joining campus clubs or organizations aligned with your hobbies and personal interests can help you connect with like-minded students. Engineering clubs, cultural organizations and student government are a few examples. Going out for an athletics team or club sports is also a great way to get involved, stay active and continue playing a sport at any skill level you choose. You’ll have the opportunity to make friends outside of class and take a break from stressful assignments.

Make the most of your first-year at 鶹˰

Your first year of college is bound to be packed with fresh faces, unfamiliar locations and adventures. Third-year undergraduate student Joshua Grebler chose 鶹˰ for his Industrial Design education, and here’s why. He speaks about the unique aspects of 鶹˰'s Industrial Design program, how it has prepared him for his career goals, and his experiences with the Industrial Design community at 鶹˰.

Choosing 鶹˰ for Industrial Design

When Joshua Grebler was looking for a school to pursue his Industrial Design degree, he had a few requirements in mind. He wanted a school with a strong focus on both technology and engineering. Having a background in computer science, Joshua was looking to integrate this knowledge into his design work.

His search led him to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (鶹˰), a public research university with a strong emphasis on STEM fields. Located in Newark, 鶹˰ has been ranked as one of the top engineering schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

“Once I considered industrial design, I did look at other places, but what really set 鶹˰ apart was the fact that it’s an engineering school. Other schools with industrial design programs tend to focus a lot on art, so the technical focus was attractive because of the resources for intersectionality inside the school.”

One of the big factors that drew Grebler to 鶹˰ was the school's focus on intersectionality. As an Industrial Design student, he wanted to learn how to create designs that were not only visually appealing but also functional and efficient. 鶹˰'s college of architecture and design provided him with the resources and knowledge to do so, while also allowing him to work with people from other programs of study as well as having access to resources from those other programs.

Grebler also appreciated the school's emphasis on finding meaning in what we create. 鶹˰'s Industrial Design program focuses on creating designs that have a purpose and contribute positively to society. This aligned with Grebler's desire to be creative with technology and create designs that had a positive impact on people's lives.

Prior to attending 鶹˰, Grebler was a computer science student at Bergen Community College. It was there that he was first exposed to Industrial Design through a manufacturing professor. This sparked his interest in the field and led him to pursue a transfer to 鶹˰'s Industrial Design program.

Preparing for Future Career Goals

As the President of 鶹˰'s Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) chapter, Joshua believes that the Industrial Design program at 鶹˰ has provided him with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue his career goals. Grebler explained that Industrial Design is a versatile and “massively employable” field, and 鶹˰'s program offers a wide range of opportunities for its students.

Students can pursue careers in consultancy, curating, designing for film and instrumentation, signage, infrastructure, consumer products, and many other fields. 鶹˰'s Industrial Design program is equipped with research labs that cater to the needs of students with a variety of interests. Joshua particularly enjoyed working in the cyborg design lab with Assistant Professor Matthew Schwartz, where they explored new avenues of design and technology.

鶹˰ also has a strong industry connection, with relationships with companies such as Nvidia, a graphics card manufacturer. Joshua worked on a research project with Nvidia, focusing on AI and cutting-edge graphics, which gave him valuable industry experience. By doing so, Grebler has also been able to continue his CS education, incorporating heavy computing into his research work.

Guidance and Mentorship from Industrial Design Faculty

Joshua highlighted the guidance and mentorship he has received from the Industrial Design faculty at 鶹˰. Matthew Schwartz, the advisor for 鶹˰'s Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) chapter, has played a significant role in Joshua's academic and professional development.

Matthew's leadership enrichment and professional development guidance have helped Joshua improve his design skills and navigate the complexities of the industry. Moreover, Joshua has learned some level of politics through his association with Matthew and the IDSA chapter.

In addition, Joshua has received valuable guidance from guest speakers and industry professionals who visit 鶹˰'s Industrial Design program. For example, a New York student liaison from the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) visited the program to provide portfolio reviews and professional development guidance. These interactions have enabled Joshua to learn about the industry's latest trends and network with professionals, which can help him in his future career.

Applying Skills and Knowledge to Real-World Projects

During his time at 鶹˰, Joshua has had many opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge he has gained in his Industrial Design program to real-world projects. He has taken on contract design work, which has allowed him to improve his skills with more curriculum knowledge. He has also done electronics and 3D work on a commission basis, which has given him valuable experience in working with clients and meeting their specific needs.

Joshua has explored freelance opportunities, which have allowed him to take on a wide range of projects and work with a variety of clients. These experiences have helped him to develop his professional network and gain exposure to different areas of Industrial Design. Joshua is excited about the potential for his skills and knowledge to translate into a successful career after graduation.

Begin your journey at 鶹˰ today

Joshua Grebler's experience at 鶹˰'s Industrial Design program has been nothing short of transformative. He has gained invaluable skills, knowledge, and mentorship, which have prepared him for a successful career in the field. The program's unique and innovative aspects, such as the focus on sustainability and meaningful work, have further solidified Joshua's passion for Industrial Design.

If you are considering pursuing a degree in Industrial Design, we highly recommend exploring 鶹˰'s program. With its outstanding faculty, cutting-edge research opportunities, and emphasis on technical and meaningful design, 鶹˰'s Industrial Design program is an excellent choice for anyone looking to excel in this field- Apply Now.

Tagged:

Undergraduate

Student Profiles

Student Life

Academic Success

Hillier College of Architecture and Design

Explore the Benefits of 鶹˰'s Industrial Design Program from a Student's Perspective!
Post Date:
Monday, May 22, 2023 Mon, 22 May 2023 18:43:35 +0000 rje5 2001 at 5 Fun Things to Explore Near 鶹˰'s Campus /admissions/blog-posts/5-fun-things-explore-near-njits-campus
If you're looking for fun things to do near campus, you're in luck. If so, you're not alone. Many students have a hard time juggling their academic and social lives while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Fortunately, there are a few key time management tips that can help college undergraduates get the most out of their busy days.

3 Important time management tips for college undergrads

With class, homework, exam prep, projects, and clubs, you may be wondering when you’ll even have time in the day to eat — here are the top time management tips for college undergraduates, and how they can help you stay organized, maximize studying time, and ultimately achieve success in your academic pursuits.

1) Set a schedule and stick to it

One of the most important time management tips for college undergrads is creating a schedule and sticking to it. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by your coursework and other commitments, but having a well-defined plan can help you stay on top of your assignments.

Creating a schedule helps ensure that you have plenty of time to devote to studying and completing assignments. If you know when your college exams are, or when your papers are due, you can plan accordingly and work on those tasks in advance. You’ll be able to avoid the last-minute stress of trying to cram in all your studying at once.

Your schedule should also include breaks and time to rest. Try to set aside some time each day to relax and recharge, or even indulge in hobbies or activities that you enjoy. This will help keep you from burning out during the semester.

By setting and sticking to a schedule, you’ll find that you have more time for studies and assignments, as well as time for yourself. So make sure you take the time to create an effective plan for success.

2) Don't procrastinate

We’ve all been there — it’s the night before a college exam and you haven’t even cracked open the textbook. You know you should be studying, but all you can think about is how much better it would feel to just chill on the couch and watch Netflix. Procrastination is one of the biggest obstacles that college students face when it comes to effective time management.

While it may seem like a good idea at the moment, procrastinating can have serious consequences in the long run. When you put off your work until the last minute, it takes longer to complete because of the stress and pressure to get it done quickly. This leaves you less time to review and understand the material. Plus, it can lead to lower grades on exams or assignments due to a lack of preparation.

Here are a few tips to help with college time management:

Break down your tasks: Make a list of all the tasks that need to be done and break them down into smaller, more manageable chunks.

Create a study plan: Schedule regular times throughout the week to review course material, do homework, and prepare for exams.

Eliminate distractions: Find a quiet space that is free from distractions like phones, TV, and other people.

Reward yourself for completing tasks: After completing a task, give yourself a reward such as a 20 minute power nap or watching an episode of your favorite show, as an incentive to keep going.

By following these college study tips, you can stay on track with your studies and avoid procrastinating. Effective undergrad time management will help you reach your academic goals, while also getting you prepared for graduate studies or the professional workforce.

3) Get enough sleep

Sleep is one of the most important components of life in general. When you don’t get enough sleep, it can lead to decreased concentration and poor grades. While it can be tempting to stay up late for studying, or going out with friends, getting an adequate amount of sleep should always come first.

One study conducted at Harvard University showed that students who got fewer than seven hours of sleep per night had GPAs that were 0.12 points lower than those who got eight hours or more of sleep. When it comes to college time management and achieving your goals, it’s essential to prioritize getting enough rest.

If you’re struggling to balance a busy social life with your studies, there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you get more sleep while still making time for your friends. For example, setting a bedtime routine will help you stick to the same schedule each night so you can get the amount of sleep your body needs. Also, consider doing some of your studying during the day, so you can spend the evening resting. You can even try having a sleepover party with your friends instead of going out — you’ll still have a good time, but in the morning you’ll feel much better.

At the end of the day, getting enough sleep is a key part of college success. When you prioritize rest as part of your undergrad time management plan, you’ll have the energy and focus needed to excel in your classes.

Take advantage of student resources at 鶹˰

Between managing homework, studying for exams, and finding time to get enough sleep, it can be challenging to stay on top of everything. Most high school seniors know the pressure that comes along with the countless college brochures sent to them. It can be difficult to make sense of what a college offers to its students, and deciding what offerings are best for you can feel overwhelming. We’re here to help! We’ve put together a list of some important factors you should be thinking about when making your decision.

1) Available areas of study

Before committing to school, make sure to familiarize yourself with the majors the university offers. You may absolutely love a certain university and their campus, only to find out they don’t offer your intended major. If you already know what you plan on studying, then you’ll want to ensure the schools you’re looking at offer that particular major. If you’re undecided, take a look at the various majors listed and see if there are any that interest you. Your first year at school is a great time to take a few different General Education (Gen Eds) courses to get a feel for what that major is all about.

Even if you declare your major upon enrollment, it’s extremely common for students to have a change of heart early on in their college career and make the decision to change their area of study. For this reason, it’s a good idea to pick a school that has a number of majors available that catch your eye. If you do end up deciding that your initially chosen major isn’t for you, you’ll have peace of mind knowing there are other majors available to jump right into.

2) Affordability of tuition

Tuition is often one of the most crucial factors you need to consider as a prospective student. College can be expensive, and often leaves students with debt that can take years to pay off. It’s important to make sure you understand your financial responsibilities for each university prior to accepting the offer of admission.

However, this isn’t to say you should live in fear of college tuition. There are many options available to students who may need assistance paying for their college education. Try not to write off a college that you are interested in right away simply because of cost. Most universities, such as 鶹˰, offer a myriad of financial aid resources and scholarship opportunities — be sure to explore these options before potentially dismissing your dream college.

Another important aspect of college tuition to keep in mind is that a higher cost of attendance doesn’t necessarily equate to a higher quality of education. Public state colleges often cost far less than private or out-of-state colleges, while still providing students a first-class quality education. 鶹˰ offers students an excellent education experience while keeping costs affordable for students of all economic backgrounds. Not only is 鶹˰ ranked No. 14 overall in the United States by Money in its list of Best Colleges for 2022, but is also one of the nation’s best colleges for students seeking a superb education with great career preparation at an affordable price, according to The Princeton Review, an honor held since 2018

3) Location can be key

College campuses come in all shapes and sizes — it’s important to make sure you take the time to find the campus environment that fits you best. There are a number of different questions regarding location that you should ask yourself when figuring out how to decide what college to go to.

Do you want to be close to home so you can visit your family?

Do you want to live on-campus or commute?

Would you prefer staying in-state or venturing out to a new place?

How far away from home are you comfortable with?

What type of weather would you prefer?

What is the area surrounding campus like?

These are all great factors to consider as they will greatly affect your happiness and overall experience at college. 鶹˰’s location makes it a great place for students given its close proximity to New York City, granting students a plethora of work and leisure opportunities.

4) Level of comfort on campus

In addition to a college’s location, think of campus itself when determining which school is right for you. Feeling safe and comfortable during your time living and/or learning on campus should be a priority. If you can, schedule visits to the schools you’re interested in to experience the vibe of the campus for yourself. Seeing pictures and videos online isn’t the same as walking around the campus in-person.

When you’re on campus you’ll start to get an idea of what it looks like to be a student at that university. With student’s walking to and from class, athletic teams practicing outdoors, and campus events taking place, you’ll be immersed in the culture. You’ll also be able to see what type of safety resources are available to students in terms of police, security, and emergency services.

5) Clubs, sports, and other student activities

Colleges and universities typically offer much more to their students than just academics. Before deciding on a school, take some time to look into what clubs, sports, and other activities are available to students. Joining a club, sport, greek life, or organization can truly make your time at college memorable. You’ll meet other students, be able to take a break from course work, and have fun doing something you love. 鶹˰ offers over 200 student organizations — whether you’re hoping to play baseball or are interested in joining the amateur radio club, 鶹˰ likely has something that’s right for you.

6) Career development services

Your time in college is intended to educate and prepare you for your future profession. While the time you spend in the classroom is an important part of this process, universities generally offer services to help you prepare for your career. Before selecting your college, it’s a good idea to look into what career development services are offered. Through career development services, students can attend networking events and get assistance in finding an internship, preparing for interviews, and meeting with advisors to help map out the beginning stages of their professional careers.

7) Quality of facilities on campus

For many students, college is the first time you’re living away from home. You’re going to be spending the majority of time on campus — to make campus feel like a home-away-from-home, the facilities at your university should be comfortable and well maintained. Before accepting an offer, learn about the residence halls, dining hall options, classrooms, libraries, labs, buildings, gyms, and healthcare services to ensure all of these factors meet or exceed your expectations. Try speaking with current residents and students to get an idea of what living there is really like.

Find the college experience you’re looking for at 鶹˰!

If you’re looking for a STEM school that offers a quality education and superb college experience, look no further. 鶹˰ will provide you with the skills and the tools necessary to propel you into your future career. Instrumental music can include hip hop, pop, and rock music.

Spotify: Instrumental Study Music Playlist

Amazon Music: Instrumental Covers For Work Playlist

Apple Music: Instrumental Study Music Playlist

2) Good vibes study playlist

If you're not interested in listening to instrumental music while you're studying, try listening to some calming good vibes. However, many students are struggling to stay focused when studying from home. Believe it or not, the physical location you’re in has a large impact on how well you’re able to concentrate. If you find that it takes you hours just to get into the right mindset for school work, keep reading for some ideas on how to enhance your study space aesthetic.

11 Ways to enhance your study space at home

There is no doubt that you will be doing some of your school work in your living space when attending college. But when using this space for multiple purposes, it's important to separate relax time and study time. When you create a dedicated study space to complete all of these tasks, you may find that you become more productive and use your time more efficiently. Check out these study space ideas for some inspiration:

1) Make sure you have enough space

Space is a rare commodity for some students who are living in dorms, sharing space with roommates, or living at home and sharing space with family. Some students have their own room designated just for work, but others don’t have that ability. If you live in a studio or one bedroom, you may be wondering where you’ll even set up your computer. Hint: it’s not on your bed.

When trying to decide where you’ll complete assignments and study, think about it in a practical way first. Is there enough space for a desk and a chair? Will you be cramped up against a wall or dresser? A proper study space should have enough room for you to use your computer or laptop, open textbooks, and take notes in a notebook...all at the same time. It may be worth investing in a desk so you can accomplish all your tasks with ease.

2) Make it comfortable

Along with having enough space to spread out with all the tools you need to do school work, you should ensure your study space is comfortable and inviting. Sitting at a desk with an uncomfortable desk can make it hard for you to stay motivated. Instead of working at the desk, you may be inclined to try and study in bed — be sure to set an alarm because chances are you’ll fall asleep. The general rule of thumb is to stay away from your bed while trying to be productive. Your brain associates your bed with sleep and rest. When you try to work from your bed, you're actually giving your brain conflicting signals on what it should be doing. So while a bed is comfy, it's not an ideal work space.

Give yourself the highest chance at success by setting up a space that you won’t dread. Take some time to search for a reliable desk with lots of space and a chair that provides good support and won’t leave you achy after those long study sessions. Keep a couple blankets close by in case it gets cold, and maybe even a desk fan for those hot summer class days. You may even want to consider using a standing desk to help streatch and reduce stiffness in your neck and back.

Everyone has a different level of comfort — choose the products, materials, and sizes that are best for you. This space is after all for YOU. If something doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to change things up.

3) Keep it organized and clean

You know what they say; “A cluttered desk is a cluttered mind.” Now, this doesn't mean you can’t ever have anything on your desk, it simply suggests that you keep papers and supplies organized and easily accessible. Think about the supplies you use most often and create a designated spot for everything. Trying to find a working pen can be a hassle when writing study guides and taking notes — use a desk organizer for pens, pencils, erasers, and highlighters. Also remember to throw away old disposable coffee mugs, food wrappers, and any other litter that’s been accumulating in your study area. You’ll never have to search for a pen again.

4) Use the right lighting

Did you know the type of lighting you use can actually make you more or less productive? Studies have shown that studying or reading in dim lighting can increase feelings of anxiety and make it harder to retain information. This has to do with your eyes straining to see the words in poor lighting. However, bright lighting that is too harsh may prevent you from focusing as it is distracting when bouncing off a book or computer screen. Make the most of your study sessions by using just the right amount of light. Placing a reading lamp on your desk can improve concentration and reduce eye strain. When using proper lighting, you can actually create a calming atmosphere that encourages productivity.

5) Eliminate distractions

Admit it, one of the hardest things about studying is having the ability to stay off your phone. Everyone’s been there. Make your designated study space just that, a place to study. Before you sit down at your desk, turn your smart phone on silent or vibrate. This will help eliminate the urge to check your phone every time you receive a notification. If you live with others, whether that be roommates or your family, consider using noise cancelling earbuds or headphones.

While mobile phones and tablets are typically the biggest distractions, there are others. Pets, roommates, family, video games, and television are also common distractions that make it difficult for students to concentrate on studying. Set up your study and school work materials in a quiet location where you won't easily lose focus. If possible, shut the door and let others know you would like some alone time to get work done. And although it's hard, you may even want to leave your pets outside of your room or studying space so you aren't tempted to play.

6) Buy some plants

Transform your study space into a tranquil jungle with plants and flowers. You may be surprised to hear that plants do more than just add decoration to your area. Research has found that due to their green color, plants facilitate creativity and productivity. Plants also clean that air which can aid in reducing headaches, fatigue, and lack of concentration. That may be graduating with a high GPA, completing an internship, or simply to get involved with student life on campus. Immersing yourself in college life can be a rewarding experience, and although it may be better to start early as a first-year college student, it’s never too late to join. With that said, here are seven ways to get involved on campus.

7 Ways to Get Involved on Campus

1) Get a job on campus

Participating in the work-study program on campus is a great way to get involved while also receiving supplemental income to pay for school. Many departments on campus are typically looking for students to be tutors, tour guides, student ambassadors and administrative assistants.

Along with earning money, having a job can add work experience to your resume and help you learn more about your college’s services. You can also make connections with the faculty you’ll be working with in your respective office. If you’re not eligible for work study, 鶹˰ also offers Institutional Work Study positions for students.

2) Join or start a student organization or club on campus

Most colleges have student-run organizations on campus that you can join. There are many interesting clubs you can join from student media and academic to religious, cultural and environmental groups. In fact, you can also find a club that focuses on your major or career path. Additionally, some colleges may offer e-sports for a variety of games including Call of Duty, Madden, FIFA and Super Smash Bros. This is a perfect way to build friendships with other students, making a large campus feel a bit cozier.

Clubs can also expose you to networking opportunities where you can cultivate professional relationships that will help you down the line when you’re looking for a career. Additionally, clubs help you develop soft skills, also known as “people skills” that allow you to effectively communicate and interact with others.

If you decide to stay with an organization long enough, you may also have a chance to become an officer where you can develop leadership skills, which are very enticing to job recruiters. 鶹˰ has plenty of extracurricular activities you can join and can be found on the university’s Highlander Hub. You can also check with student services to learn more about the process of starting your own student organization.

3) Participate in club sports or intramural teams

If you're not a collegiate athlete but you still love playing sports, many schools offer club sports or intramural teams you can join. Most universities have a variety of sports you can pick from including basketball, baseball, soccer, bowling, hockey, flag football, and more.

One important thing about club sports and intramural teams is that you don’t have to be the most athletic person – there’s a level playing field where you’ll be playing with people with the same experience level as you have. Playing sports can help you meet people with the same interests as you and give you a chance to maintain your mental and physical health while in college.

4) Attend events on campus

Public lectures, sports events, career fairs, local tours, TED talks, and festivals are just a few examples of some of the exciting events that happen on campus. If you don’t know where to search for college events, you can look for fliers throughout campus that are usually posted on bulletin boards in campus centers, lounges, and hallways of academic buildings. Colleges also send out emails to students for involvement opportunities. Most schools send emails regarding special events, but be sure to check out 鶹˰'s calendar of events which can give you a catalog of organizations happening around campus.

5) Join a sorority or a fraternity

Joining a fraternity or sorority is a great way to make friends and become more acquainted on campus. Sororities and fraternities often offer alumni networking which provide internship and job opportunities. Additionally, while sororities and fraternities are notable for gatherings, you can actually build leadership skills as members are responsible for planning charity and fundraising events. While Greek organizations can be a hefty time commitment, the investment you make will prove to be valuable to you now and in the future

6) Become a school tutor or teaching assistant

If you're passionate about a certain subject, you should consider helping other students by tutoring them. Offer one-on-one tutoring sessions or be a part of a tutor group to aid others who may be struggling in a certain class. Along with helping students learn new information, you can also earn some extra money as a tutor if you get a work study position on campus. Being a tutor exposes you to many opportunities to meet other students or faculty within your major.

7) Participate in volunteering and community service

If you're looking to become more familiar with not only your college campus but also its surrounding community, then volunteering for a cause is a great way to get involved. In fact, 鶹˰ has plenty of community service organizations that you can join if you feel passionate about a specific cause. For example, Habitat for Humanity is an international organization on campus that helps design and build affordable housing for people in need. 鶹˰ also has a food pantry organization that helps students with food insecurity by providing food and hosting food drives within the community.

Being involved in your community allows you to see issues that affect people and change your perspective. Additionally, while some students may dread going to classes, volunteering will expose you to what happens outside of campus and give you a more memorable college experience. Volunteering in an excellent way to make a difference in your community.

Get involved at 鶹˰!

It’s clear that getting involved on campus opens yourself to a bunch of opportunities that’ll benefit you during and after college. In fact, you can go to Branch Brook Park Station if you ever want to easily enter for a serene day outside.

3) Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park is another wonderful option to catch the fantastic view of the Passaic River on the orange boardwalk. However, many students get carried away with the fast-paced nature of summer courses, and struggle to maintain a healthy school-life balance. Don’t let your summer slip away by being consumed with class. Follow these tips to get the most out of your summer courses and still have a relaxing vacation.

10 Things College Students Should Do to Stay in Balance During the Summer

1) Rest

Listen, we know you’re working on tight deadlines and have plenty of due dates - but getting enough sleep each night is a necessity. Try to commit to 8 hours a night. If you can’t get in a full 8 hours, see if you can schedule some time for a midday nap. Even taking 30 minutes to swing in a hammock, or close your eyes on your beach towel and listen to the sound of the waves can make a huge difference.

2) Eat right

Believe it or not, an unhealthy diet can actually increase your stress levels. When you eat healthily, you prepare your body to fight stress. You should also try to reduce your caffeine intake - high doses can increase anxiety. This may be a hard task especially if you put yourself into a position where you need a few all-nighters, but you can always start again the next day by going for one less caffeine boost.

Craving something sweet? Summer is the perfect time to make your own healthy fruit popsicles. With simple and nutritious ingredients, you’ll have a refreshing frozen treat to keep you energized for your studies.

3) Reach out to friends and family

Receiving support from your family or your friends can get you through some pretty stressful times. Studies have shown that spending time with family, friends or loved ones can help reduce stress and anxiety, lead to a healthier lifestyle and lengthen your life. Consider joining your family for a day together at an amusement park, day hike, mini golfing, or just at a BBQ. Having support from those who care about you is a game changer for college students.

4) Write

Journaling can be relaxing - it can help your brain dump your anxieties, fears and feelings! It also allows you to collect your thoughts to self-reflect on any stressful situations. Before you go to bed each night, take a moment to decompress and write down your thoughts, feelings, and whatever adventures you went on that day. You can download the Journey app or one like it to help you get started on journaling.

5) Spend time outdoors

If you’re taking summer courses, it can be easy to get so caught up in studying and staying on track of assignments that you don’t even realize the day has gone by. Before you know it, the entire summer has gone by and you spent the entire time in your room. Remember to take breaks throughout the day and spend some time outdoors. You could even bring your books to the beach to study by the ocean and then cool off in the water afterward.

6) Exercise

Exercise is one of the most important activities in combating stress. If you’re around campus, 鶹˰ has several exercise facilities, including an indoor track, pool, and a soccer field to keep your blood flowing. Research shows that people who exercise regularly are less likely to experience anxiety than those who don’t. Take a break from homework to go for a jog on the track or to lift some weights and then get back to your books.

7) Interact with a pet

Come on, who wouldn’t want to do this anyway? But in all seriousness, it’s proven that hanging out with a pet promotes a positive mood. If you’re starting to feel overwhelmed, it may be time to take your dog for a walk or cuddle on the couch with your kitten. If you live on campus and don’t have a pet nearby, keep an eye out for “Pet a Puppy” days held by many organizations on campus.

8) Listen to your favorite songs

Music can have a beneficial effect on our physiological functions, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress and hormones. Next time you’re feeling stressed, listen to your favorite playlist.

9) Light a candle

Some scents of candles can be extremely soothing. The most calming scents are lavender, rose, bergamot, orange or orange blossom and sandalwood. For those living in 鶹˰ dorms where you can’t light a candle - a diffuser with essential oils is also highly recommended.

10) Know your resources

The Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (C-CAPS) provides safe, non-judgmental and confidential services that include individual and group counseling and workshops.
