• Please upload a copy of your EAD card to your portalÌýonce you have received it.
• If authorized forÌýpre-completion OPT:Ìý
  • You may work 20 hours or less per week (part-time) when classes are in session (spring and fall semesters), and over 20 hours per week (full time) during school breaks (summer or winter breaks). Your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will show part-time or full-time authorization.
• If authorized forÌýpost-completion OPT or STEM OPT Extension:
  • You must work at least 20 hours per week in a qualifying position to be considered employed.
• You may not accrue more than 90 days of unemployment throughout the 12 months of post-completion OPT.
  • Unemployment days will be accrued for every day you are not employed, beginning the first day of your OPT, as indicated on your EAD card. Ìý
• You must have received your EAD before you start working.Ìý
• You may not begin any type of employment or training (paid or unpaid) until the start date on your EAD.​
  • ​This includes volunteering for a future employer.
• All employment must be directly related to your program of study at Â鶹³ÉÈË°æ.Ìý
  • ​This does not mean it is related to a course, or multiple courses, you may have completed, this means your employment must be related to the degree which you completed.
• All employment and employment changes must be reportedÌýthrough the SEVP Portal.
  • ​If you change your immigration status, please send us a copy of new visa toÌýglobal@njit.eduÌý.
• Employment must be reported within 10 days of any change occurring. Such as:
  • Start of new employment
  • End of employment
  • Change in employer information
• Employment changes can be reported before the change occurs with no limit on advance timeline.

• All employment must be directly related to your program of study at Â鶹³ÉÈË°æ.ÌýThis does not mean it is related to a course, or multiple courses, you may have completed, this means your employment must be related to the degree which you completed.
• Employment may be paid or unpaid.ÌýPlease make sure you review the information aboutÌývolunteering vs unpaid employment, found HERE,Ìýcarefully to ensure you are meetingÌýguidelines.
• Employment may be long or short term. Students may engaged in long term, salaried positions, or short term, contract positions or internships, as long as all other employment requirements are met.
• Multiple employers may be authorized, as long as: All employment is related to your program of study, reported in the SEVP Portal, and theÌýtotal hours per week of all employment is 20 hours or more.
• Self employment may be authorized, as long as your work is related to your program of study. Please be aware, however, self employment is NOT authorized for the 24 month STEM OPT Extension.

*Students must review the requirements outlined for OPT employment and determine if their position meets these criteria. The OGI is not able to approve/disprove employment for OPT students, and it is the responsibility of the student to enter all employment information in a timely manner in the SEVP Portal. When starting your employment, you will need to:

• CompleteÌýthe Form I-9: Form I-9 is the Employment Eligibility Verification form implemented by USCIS. Upon hiring you, your employer is required to complete it with your information to verify your identity and that you are authorized to work in the U.S. Some employers don’t have experience hiring F-1 students. You can direct your employer to USCIS’sÌý, pages 15-21.
• : You must report your employment within 10 days on the SEVP Portal. You will receive an email from SEVP with a link and instructions to create an account once your OPT is approved and active.
• RequestÌýa new I-20 after you report your new employment: You may request a new I-20 from OGI after you report new employment. This is not required by the regulations but OGI recommends that you carry an updated I-20 when you travel outside the U.S. In some cases, employers might request to keep a copy of an updated I-20, but they are not allowed to withhold payment until you provide it. You can request an updated I-20 via theÌýÌýInternational Student Portal. Processing time is 7Ìýbusiness days.
• Uplaoda a copy of your EAD to yourÌýÌýportal so we can check your SEVIS record and make sure the dates match.
• Keep track of your hours: You are required to work more than 20 hours a week while on OPT (full time) in order to maintain status and not accrue unemployment. Keep a copy of your paycheck for your own records in case you are required to demonstrate that you were employed full time. This might be necessary if you apply for H-1B or employment-based permanent residency in the future.ÌýIf you have an unpaid internship while on OPT, you should keep a timesheet and have your employer sign off on it. That way you will have a record that you worked more than 20 hours per week even if you were not receiving pay. Unpaid/ volunteering work must also be related to your field of study.
• Applying for aÌý: If you don’t already have one, you can apply as early as the start date on your EAD.

Once you have received yourÌýEAD card and your OPT period has begun (as indicated by the start date on your EAD card), students must comply with USCIS requirements for OPT employment reporting.

**Please note that this reporting requirement will now be handled through OGI and will supersede the previous requirement to report directly to SEVP**.

While you are still welcome to continue reporting your employment and any employmentÌýchanges directly through the SEVP Portal, the OPT Reporting E-Form will need to be submitted to OGI regardless.Ìý

• SEVP will send instructions and access to the SEVP Portal toÌýstudents with approved OPT employment
  • SEVP will send Portal information via email AFTER the OPT start date.
    • If your start date has passed and you have not received the information to create your SEVP Portal account, please email global@njit.edu directly so we may contact SEVP on your behalf.​
  • ​If you change your immigration status, please send us a copy of new visa toÌýglobal@njit.eduÌý.
• Employment must be reported within 10 days of any change occurring. Changes include:

While the OPT application is pending

If your program of study has ended:

Unless it is an emergency,Ìýdo not travel while your OPT is pending if your I-20 program of study has ended.

You will not be able to re-enter with anÌýI-20 if your program end date has passedÌýuntil your OPT is approved. Additionally, USCIS might send you a Request for Further Evidence (RFE) to your U.S. address while you are abroad, which requires answering as soon as possible. If your OPT is approved while you are outside the U.S. you will be required to have your EAD in hand to re-enter the country. USCIS cannot mail your EAD outside of the U.S.ÌýIf you leave the U.S. after your I-20 has expired but before your OPT is approved, you will have to wait until your OPT is approved and you have received your EAD before returning to the U.S. Someone will have to mail you your EAD to your home country (consider the risks of losing the EAD in the mail).

If you have not yet completed your program of study:

Students may choose to travel and re-enter the USÌýprior to their program end date while their OPT application is pendingÌýwith USCIS at their own discretion.ÌýÌýTravel will not cancel a pending OPT application, however, if you are outside of the US and USCIS send you a Request For Evidence, you will not be present to address this request in a timely manner and may jeopardize your OPT application.Ìý Additionally, travel and re-entry so close to the end of your program may raise questions with Customs and Border Patrol, and students may wish to carry copies of course syllabus, class schedules, etc in order to demonstrate to CBP that their return to the US for the last few weeks of their program is critical for their graduation and completion of their degree.

Travel outside the US after OPT is approved:

In order to reenter the US after travel abroad, you must have:

• STEM OPT EAD in hand
• ÌýI-20 with a valid travel signature
• Valid passport
• Most recentÌýÌý(not travel history page)
• Valid F-1 visa
• Letter or proof of employment.

*Travel signatures are valid for only 6 months while on OPT.

If you exceed your 90 days of unemployment while outside the U.S., CBP can deny your reentry.Ìý

Employer approved vacations are not considered "unemployment", as this is an earned vacation benefit. If you are continuously employed while on vacation, you will not be accruing unemployment days.

OPT employment authorization is automatically terminated when student begins study at another educational level, regardless of the approved dates listed on the EAD card.

Students MAY NOT continue employment, in any capacity, after starting coursework for a new program, unless they receive prior authorization to do so.Ìý

Additionally, OPT employment authorization is automatically terminated the day a student's SEVIS record is transferred to another institution. if you will be transferring to another school, plan your SEVIS transfer release date accordingly with your employer and new institution in order to avoid status violations.

Recreational and avocational classes are permissible. Recreational and avocational classes are those done to pursue a hobby or personal interest, but will not lead to another degree at any level.
