Title IX of theEducational Amendments of 1972
The Office of Civil Rights within the United States Department ofEducation implemented Title IX of the Educational Amendmentsof 1972 to help colleges and universities address and preventsex-based discrimination.
Title IX states that “no person in the United States shall, on thebasis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied thebenefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educationprogram or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
Mandated Reporters
The employees required to report any ProhibitedConductinvolving students to the Title IX Coordinatorthat they witness or become aware of are: 1) all supervisory employees and 2) any employee whose position involves regular interactions with students.By way of example only, these student-interacting positions are:
- Academic advisors
- Coaches and other athletic staff who interact directly with students
- Dean of Students and Campus Life staff
- Graduate research assistants
- Instructional staff (faculty, lecturers, adjuncts, etc.)
- Public Safety
- Residence Life and Student Life staff
- Resident Assistants
Mandated Reportersmust:
- as soon as feasibly possible, or
- Directly contact the Title IX Coordinatorfor reports involving 鶹˰ students. Reports or concerns involving employees should be directed to the Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
Duties of Mandated Reporters - Listen. Support. Report.
While mandated reporters have the initial obligation to reportincidents of sexual harassment or sex discrimination to the Title IXCoordinator or Deputy Coordinator as soon as possible, they should first provide support to the reporting party and ensure they are safe.
All relevant details about theincident(s) thathas been shared with the universityemployee must be reported. This includes the names of thealleged respondent, the student (or employee under your supervision)who experienced thealleged misconduct, any othersinvolved in the allegedmisconduct, as well as relevant facts, including the date, timeand location.

What must MandatedReportersreport?
Any observed, experienced or known discrimination on the basis of sexincluding the following forms of sex-basedharassment: sexual violence, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual exploitation,and stalkinginvolving anymember of our university community, must be reported.
Depending on where the incident(s) took place, the alleged misconduct may not meet the requirements under Title IX but may fall under other University policies. The Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Coordinator will make this determination.
